Description

The Cygnus Loop (radio source W78, or Sharpless 103) is a large supernova remnant  in the constellation Cygnus, an emission nebula measuring nearly 3°, or 6 full-moons, across.
It contains many popular objects, such as the Eastern Veil (NGC 6992), the Witch's Broom (NGC 6960) and Pickering's Triangle.  These are best viewed using a visual OIII filter.
It is approximately 2,700 light years away and was formed by a 12 to 15 solar mass star that exploded 20,000 years ago.  However, despite many searches, no compact stellar remnant has been found.
